The semi-final picture’s a little clearer after last week’s Champions League quarter-final first legs. Nothing’s decided yet though, as we’re only halfway through each tie. With everything to play for, we take a look at the best Champions League bets this week.
Manchester United completed an unlikely comeback in the last round away at Paris Saint-Germain, and they need to do the same again on Tuesday. It’s a tough ask though, away to Barcelona at the the Nou Camp. United afforded their opponents too much respect last week, but they’re likely to deploy a similar game plan once again.
Barca are undefeated in their last 30 Champions League fixtures at home, winning 27 of them. They’ve never lost at home to United, who failed to register a shot on target in last week’s game. Lionel Messi had a quiet night at Old Trafford, but the Argentine has 13 goals in his last nine home games against English sides. Barcelona to win to nil and Messi to score anytime is 5/2 with bet365.
We’re going for a similar bet in Tuesday’s other game, as Juventus host Ajax in Turin. The Old Lady surprisingly let a lead slip to lose at SPAL on Saturday, but Max Allegri made sweeping changes for the game. The first leg with Ajax finished 1-1, with Cristiano Ronaldo on target for the Bianconeri. The Portuguese forward has scored in each of his last five games against the Eredivisie outfit, netting eight in total.
Ronaldo’s also scored more than half of all his Champions League goals in the knockout stages, proving he’s the man for the big occasion. Ajax have been brilliant in Europe this season, but we think their run’s coming to an end in these football predictions. Juve have a wonderful defence and kept a clean sheet at home to Atletico Madrid in the last round. Juve to win to nil and Ronaldo to score is 18/5 with Betfair.
Moving on to Wednesday night, and Premier League leaders Liverpool head to Porto with a solid 2-0 advantage from the first leg. Jurgen Klopp’s side have won their last seven matches, including another big 2-0 win at the weekend, as they beat Chelsea at home. They’re in fine form and looking really dangerous.
Porto meanwhile have won their last five in the Primeira Liga, but Liverpool are a step up from the Portuguese top flight in these Champions League predictions. The Reds are chasing a double, and they’re 23/20 with Betfred to reach the semis with a win this week.
Finally, to the finely poised all-English tie between Manchester City and Tottenham. The Blues were a little out of sorts in losing 1-0 in north London last week, but they’re still in the hunt for a historic quadruple and favourites for the win on Wednesday. Tottenham talisman Harry Kane is out after his ankle injury in the first leg, which was a first defeat in 15 for City.
Both sides won at the weekend, and we’re going for a home win here. The question is whether Tottenham can score, which could potentially send them through on away goals. With that in mind, we can expect Pep Guardiola to throw caution to the wind. A 2-0 win is enough for City, and that’s priced at 7/1. A slightly safer bet would be the Citizens to win to nil at 13/10 with William Hill.
